Advancing Civics Education in Connecticut

Civics First is a private, non-profit association that conducts and promotes law-related education programs in Connecticut’s public, private, and parochial schools. Students who participate in our programs develop self-confidence, critical thinking, and public speaking skills while learning about the Constitution and the rule of law. Established in 1976, Civics First partners with many private and public groups and individuals throughout the state, including the bar, state and federal courts, and institutions of higher education.

2018 Connecticut Mock Trials By the Numbers

“I truly cannot say enough positive things about the mock trial program that Civics First has provided for Connecticut students, and I hope the program thrives for many years to come.”

Marcia Hamelin, Weston Parent and Coach

This year more than 600 students from schools across Connecticut participated in Mock Trials hosted by Civics First. Forty-six schools with 57 teams competed in state and federal court rooms with dozens of volunteers who served as judges. Mock trial is a unique program that teaches language and communication, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills, at the same time that students compete in a real-life trial setting competing against their peers throughout the state.  No one but Civics First can provide this experience, as so many parents and educators can attest.
