Guaranteed Income Program of Michigan: Expanding to Support Families :- The state of Michigan is growing a groundbreaking program that helps needy families by giving them cash directly, with no strings attached.
A $20 million grant from the state will allow the Rx Kids program to spread to five counties in the eastern Upper Peninsula. It started in Flint. The goal of this project is to help families who are having a hard time and reduce kid poverty.
Michigan’s Guaranteed Income Program
The Rx Kids program provides financial assistance to mothers and families during critical periods:
Mid-Pregnancy Payment: During the middle of their pregnancy, mothers get $1,500 to help pay for things like food, prenatal care, and beds.
Payment Every Month After Birth: Families get $500 every month for a year after the birth of their child, for a total of $7,500.
Impact of the Program
H. Luke Shaefer, co-director of Rx Kids, says that the program has had a big good effect on families:
Getting kids out of poverty: The scheme has helped millions of kids get out of poverty.
Better food security: Families had the lowest levels of food hardship ever reported.
Better financial stability: During the program’s run, families’ credit scores hit all-time highs.
