Paris 2024 Olympics wrestling: Injured Nisha Dahiya puts on valiant effort but campaign ends in tears

Indian wrestler Nisha Dahiya was in a lot of pain and hurt, but she lost her quarterfinal match in the women’s 68 kg event at the Paris 2024 Olympics on Monday.

The 25-year-old Indian wrestler lost 10–8 to the 18-year-old Pak Sol Gum of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea in the quarterfinals. She was wearing heavy straps on her right hand during the match.

Later, Pak Sol Gum lost to Amit Elor of the USA in the semi-finals of the women’s 68 kg freestyle event because Elor was better technically. This meant that Nisha couldn’t get a bronze medal through the repechage round.

Dahiya, who won silver at the 2023 Asian Championships, got off to a good start in her quarterfinal match. The Indian wrestler got an early 8–2 lead, but she had to take a medical break because her hand hurt.

She switched to a defensive plan to keep her advantage while she dealt with the pain and strong emotions. But Pak Sol Gum took advantage of the chance and scored eight points in a row to make it to the wrestling semi-finals.

Nisha was taken to a hospital inside the Games Village for a scan after the game.

Later, it was found out that Nisha had hurt her shoulder badly. The Indian Olympic Association said in a statement, “The course of her treatment will be planned after more tests are done.”
