Novak Djokovic beat Rafael Nadal despite a fierce comeback in the second set at Roland Garros on Monday. It was the 60th meeting between these two of tennis’s all-time greats at the 2024 Paris Games.
In what was likely the last match in their epic tennis battle, Novak Djokovic beat Rafael Nadal in a tough match on Monday at the Paris Olympics. Tom Daley, a British diver, won his fifth medal in five Games.
In the pool, Summer McIntosh of Canada started her bid for gold in the 400m medley in the morning. Later that same day, Ariarne Titmus of Australia was a heavy favorite to win her second swimming gold.
Fans are enjoying the beautiful blue skies over Paris, which is a nice change from the soggy opening event three days ago. Gold medals are up for grabs in 11 sports.
Paris and the nearby areas were warned of extreme heat, but the hottest place to be was Roland Garros, where Djokovic and Nadal played for the 60th time.
They had a very close 30-29 record against each other before the match, but the Spaniard had always won on clay in the French city over the years.
The Spanish great, on the other hand, is getting old and hurt, and he said before the match that he would have a hard time competing with Djovokic.
That was sadly true in the first set, when the cruel Serb beat the former king of clay 6-1.
But Nadal turned back the years in the second set, with the help of a loud crowd at Roland Garros. He came back from being down 4-0 to 4-4 with two breaks of serve.
At the end, Djovokic found an extra gear and won 6-1, 6-4. The two tennis stars embraced at the net, and Nadal waved to the crowd at Roland Garros.
‘Goofy Tassie girl’
It’s going to be another exciting night of swimming. Titmus is trying to add the 200m freestyle title to the 400m title she won easily over McIntosh and Katie Ledecky on Saturday, when she defended her title.
Titmus, who is 23 years old, is the favorite to win the 200-meter race because she is the current winner and holds the world record.
Aussie Mollie O’Callaghan is her biggest rival. Until Titmus beat her in June, O’Callaghan had the best time ever.
The women’s 400m individual medley, the men’s 200m freestyle, the men’s 100m backstroke, and the women’s 100m breaststroke are the other swimming events on Monday.

‘I know how much today means to him’
In diving, Daley and his partner Noah Williams won a sad silver medal in the men’s synchronized 10m platform, coming in second place to Lian Junjie and Yang Hao from China.
Williams tried not to cry as he thought about his old coach Dave Jenkins, who died in 2021, after the last Olympics in Tokyo.
Daley’s father Rob died of cancer in 2011. She told the BBC, “I’ve never seen Noah cry in my life, but I know how important today is to him.”
“It’s very sad Dave is not here, but I know Dave and my dad would both be so proud to see us here today.”
Daley’s first Olympics were in Beijing in 2008, when he was 14 years old. He got his first medal, a bronze, at the London Games in 2012.
Another bronze medal was his in Rio, and then another in Tokyo. In the men’s synchronized 10m platform event at those Games, he finally won gold.
In Paris, China won the first diving gold medal by beating the US and UK in the women’s synchronized 3m springboard.
Seine training scrapped
As another exciting fight for gold, China and Japan are going up against each other in the men’s gymnastics final.
Sports like archery, kayaking, mountain biking, horseback riding, fencing, judo, shooting, and skateboarding all have gold medals up for grabs.
The men’s skateboarding street title defense by Yuto Horigome takes place after the event was pushed back from Saturday due to rain.
Japan could win all three medals. Sora Shirai, the 2023 world champion, and Ginwoo Onodera, who is 14 years old, are also strong favorites.
In women’s basketball, the US will play Japan to start their tournament and try to win their eighth straight gold medal. Veteran Diana Taurasi will be trying to get her sixth gold medal in her last international event.
Also, Olympic organizers had to cancel a second day of swimming training planned for Monday in the River Seine because it was dirty from the rain over the weekend.
