The men’s triathlon at the Paris 2024 Olympics was supposed to happen on Tuesday, but it has been moved to Wednesday because the water quality in the River Seine is too bad, according to Olympic officials. At this point, there are too many germs that cause infections, like E.coli, for athletes to safely compete.

Today, World race said that the men’s race at the Paris Olympics will not happen as planned because the pollution level in the Seine is still too high.

The new date for the race is Wednesday at 10:45 a.m. (08:45 GMT), right after the women’s event, which was supposed to start at 8 a.m.

The choice hurts the organizers because they were sure the water quality would get better in time for the race, even though it rained a lot last Friday and Saturday, making it dirty.

There is now more doubt for the 55 triathletes who were planning to race on Tuesday.

“Despite the improvement of water quality levels over the last hours, the readings at some points of the swim course are still above the acceptable limits,” organizers said.

They said that World Triathlon would meet with coaches on Tuesday at 8 a.m. to give them all the information they need and the most up-to-date race plan.

If the amount of bacteria stays too high by Wednesday morning, the men’s and women’s runs will probably be moved to Friday, which is a backup day set aside for the events.

If the mixed sprint relay event on August 5 doesn’t happen, it will happen on August 6.

As a key legacy of the Games, the city of Paris promised to make the Seine swimmable. To do this, they spent 1.4 billion euros ($1.51 billion) on wastewater infrastructure to keep sewage from spilling into the river.

Early this month, Anne Hidalgo, the mayor of Paris, went for a swim in the river to try toll naysayers.

It was always a risk that the river would be clean enough for the race, since the quality of the water changes a lot from day to day.

Infection-causing germs like E. coli and enterococci are much more common when it rains.
